St. Nino’s Day in Georgia

Georgian Orthodox Church on January, 27 honors the memory of St Nino, Enlightener of Georgia. Thereby, in temples are held divine services.

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II held service in Sioni Cathedral Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.

St. Nino was born in the city of Kolastry, Cappadocia, where were many Georgian villages. She was the only daughter of famous parents: the Roman general Zabulon and Susanna, sister of Jerusalem Patriarch Juvenal.

When Nino was twelve years old, her parents having sold all their property moved to Jerusalem. On arrival in the holy city, the father of Nino - Zebulun, decided to take the vows.

After the departure of Zebulun, Jerusalem Patriarch Juvenal blessed Susanna by deaconess, and Nino was given for the education to a respectable wife - Sarah Niafor. Sarah Niafor raised Nino in a Christian spirit. By Sarah Nino learned how to hit Reese Lord in a distant country pagans - Georgia and from that day began to pray fervently to honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary to condescend her to knee of the Lord Rize linked most beloved son by hands of God's Mother.

Holy Mother of God heeded supplications of Nino and stood by her in a dream and said, "Go to the specific Georgia and preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus there". Juvenal blessed a niece and she went on the way to the aim.

After suffering great difficulties in the way, she finally reached the city Urbnisi and some time stayed there. Soon she together with the pagans – urbniss who went to worship the idol of Armazian, she arrived in Mtskheta.

St. Nino took refuge in the royal family gardener. Thanks to the prayers of St. Nino God gave the child to the childless family. Converts wife praised Christ and became disciples of the Holy Virgin.
By St. Nino pulled followers of the Christian faith. Soon she became so famous that many pagans began to turn to her for help, and got it, believed in Christ.

St. Nino passed away in the village of Bodbe. By her wish she was buried there. Later on her grave King Mirian built a temple in the name of St George. Today this place operates as convent of St Nino.
