On July, 13 Georgia celebrates Svetitskhovloba

Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates one of the most important religious holidays of the country – Svetitskhovloba, dedicated Heaton Lord and that exhales a miraculous life-giving pillar of world.

 

As reported in the Patriarchate, in connection with a holiday in the Patriarchal Church of the Divine Liturgy will held Svetitshoveli Metropolitan of Akhaltsikhe and Tao-Klardjeti Theodore Chuadze.

According to legend, in the I-st century in Mtskheta was a Jewish community, and its rabbi Elioz being in Jerusalem, bought out the soldiers crucified Jesus Christ the Savior tunic. Being back to Mtskheta Elioz handed it to his sister Sidonia, who took the coat in hand, sobbing and died on the spot. Since the coat could not be disentangled from the hands of the deceased, he was buried together with Sidonia, and then on the grave was grew a big cedar, which became for residents of Mtskheta a sacred tree.

When in Georgia in the IV century St. Nino began her preaching the sacred cedar was cut down to build on its site a wooden church. However, the tree trunk could not be moved. After some time, the residents of Mtskheta saw how this pillar, shining with light, began to climb up, while from the stump was running out of the chrism and to people who lived in Mtskheta was revealed many miraculous healings. Hence the name of raised on the site of the temple - Svetitskhoveli.

In the second half of the V century Holy King Vakhtang Gorgasali raised basilica on the site of destroyed wooden church. In the XI century on the site of the damaged Basilica, Catholicos of Kartli Melchizedek I built a church, whose architect was Arsakidze (mentioned in the inscription on the facade).
