Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will be fully operational in 2014, said on Wednesday the Azerbaijan Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panakhov.
According to him, currently building works are in the process of fast pace both on the territory of Georgia and in Turkey.
"The works in the frames of the project continue so that the next year the railway was put into operation", - said the Deputy Minister.
Creating a new rail link provides the construction covers rehabilitation and reconstruction of railway site Marabda-Akhalkalaki (excluding stations), as well as constructions from Akhalkalaki to the Turkish border (Kartsakhi).
The reconstruction of the project Marabda-Akhalkalaki covers three phases: site of Marabda-Tetritskaro covers - 29.2 km, site of Tetritskaro-Tsalka - 49.7 km, Tsalka-Akhalkalaki - 74.1 km.
Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is constructed in accordance with the Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. Azerbaijan has allocated for the construction of the Georgian section of a loan of $ 775 million. Funding of this project is fulfilled by the State Oil Fund is fulfilled accordance with the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan "On the implementation of the measures for the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars" from February, 21 2007.
In frames of the project Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is planned to build a new 105-kilometer branch railway line, 76 km of which will be stretched through Turkey and 29 km at the territory of Georgia.
Peak throughput corridor capacity will be 17 million tons of cargo. At the initial stage, this figure will be at the level of one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
